Winter blues? Not in Berlin

The capital reveals its very own charm in the cold season too, and a visit in December or January offers lots of fun and pleasurable moments. Whether in the numerous museums, the indoor swimming pools, retro cinemas, or even outside with mulled wine, sledging, skating or ice hockey - Berlin also comes up trumps in winter with its variety for everyone!

Feel-good atmosphere in icy temperatures

When the temperatures drop, there is a great need to feel cosy and safe. How about a cosy cinema evening? In the metropolis on the Spree, however, you shouldn't just go to any old huge cinema, but to a special one. In the Babylon, located in a listed building on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, you can experience not only arthouse cinema, but also cultural events and silent film concerts. The Moviemento is also anything but ordinary. The small Kreuzberg cinema has been around since 1907 - pure nostalgia!

Berlin's swimming pools are also well worth a visit due to their historical charm. Whereas the Stadtbad Mitte “James Simon” welcomes you with its simple and monumental 1930s architecture, the Stadtbad Neukölln impresses with the splendour of a historic bathing palace. Mosaics, columns, sauna with roof garden and other magnificent details turn swimming into a sightseeing experience.

You can marvel at pure Art Nouveau while swimming lengths in the Stadtbad Charlottenburg. The elaborately designed hall with its numerous decorative elements is the oldest swimming pool in the capital. If you prefer to be pampered, there are of course a number of spas in Berlin. The choice ranges from real wellness temples in the style of a Balinese village in Vabali to floating pools under a large sound dome in the Liquidrom.

Active in the Berlin winter

When the streets and roofs of Berlin are covered with a blanket of snow - which is not unheard of in April - every hill, no matter how small, is transformed into a sledging slope by the locals. Why not get out the sledge in a historical park like the Schlosspark Charlottenburg? If the temperatures are mild, you can still enjoy pleasurable winter activities. But it wouldn't be Berlin if you could only just go skating here: at the Lankwitz ice rink you can drift over the ice at 50 km/h in an ice kart.

Those who are already advanced on blades will find the perfect conditions at the Horst-Dohm ice rink in Wilmersdorf. International competitions are also held on the 400 m speed skating oval. The Friedrichshagen Eisstrand (ice beach) is particularly family-friendly. Whereas the lakeside resort beckons in summer, in the cold season families skate rounds on the Müggelsee. And in the event hall you can warm yourself up by the fireplace with mulled wine or children's punch. The Eisbären Berlin’s home games, which are held in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, are also a top event. When the capital's ice hockey club takes the league by storm, an electric atmosphere in the stadium is guaranteed!
