Museum for Natural History

With more than 30 million objects the Berlin Museum of Natural History is the biggest German natural history museum.
In some ways the German history is reflected in the history of the museum for natural history. It was established in 1810 at the same time like the university "Unter den Linden" and consisted of three museums: the Anatomisch-Zootomische, the Mineralogische (since 1841) and the zoological museum. Around 1880 the numerous objects of the collections already filled two-thirds of the main building. This constrained not only the scientific work but also the visitors. As a result a new museum was established and opened in 1889 by the German emperor Wilhelm II in the today's location in Invalidenstrasse.
The museum for natural history organizationally belongs to the Humboldt University and is mostly known because of the skeleton by Brachiosaurus brancai the worldwide biggest built up skeleton of a dinosaur. That is not only amazement for children.
"Evolution in action" is an exhibition about the today's variety of the life forms as example of the animals. A twelve metre long and four metre high "biodiversity wall" gives an impression of this breathtaking variety with 3000 different animals. The exhibition shows the animal world as the result of the evolution which has begun approx. 3.5 milliard years ago.
In addition there are minerals, fossils, hoofed animals and domestic animals you can marvel at in the museum. All together the collections of the museum enclose more than 30 million objects from the mineralogy, zoology and palaeontology. They are presented on approx. 6,600 sqm exhibition spaces. Beside the long-term exhibitions there also are interesting special exhibitions subject to different topics.
