Exhibitions, archives and library on homosexual life.
The Schwule Museum Berlin is the only institution worldwide researching systematically on homosexual history, culture and daily life presenting moreover exhibitions and publications on the subject. The archive collects material on any support related to the social and cultural history of homosexual life as well as to the LGBT community. Plenty of private donations, magazines, newspapers' articles, posters, films, photos, records, costumes and knick-knacks are collected. The library offers today more than 10,000 volumes. Both archive and library are open to anyone interested in the subject.
Inaugurated in 2004, the museum's permanent exhibition offers a summary of more than 200 years of homosexual history on Germany, stretching between oppression and emancipation. Temporary exhibitions are usually dedicated to single artists or subjects related to homosexual culture. Several hommages to public figures such as Oscar Wilde, Marlene Dietrich, Michel Foucault and Greta Garbo were organized by the institution.
Goal of the Schwule Museum is presenting the variety of projects of homosexual living in order to get away from an easy stigmatization and to encourage acceptance of different ways of living together.
